This position is responsible for examining patients’ eyes, performing diagnostic testing, giving advice on visual problems, prescribing and fitting glasses or contact lenses, and making appropriate referrals to an ophthalmologist or other health professionals when a disease is detected.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communicate with patients of all ages to obtain detailed case histories.
Examine eyes using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, ocular motility and coordination and to detect signs of eye diseases and other abnormalities.
Diagnose and formulate conservative orthoptic treatment e.g. the use of a patch to treat a lazy eye.
Perform diagnostic tests and analyze test results in consultation with a CCAD ophthalmologist.
Prescribe, supply, fit and adjust eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids.
Educate and counsel patients on eye health, contact lens care, and to offer advice and reassurance about matters related to vision.
Consult with and refer patients to an ophthalmologist or other health professional when additional medical treatment is determined to be necessary.
Perform other duties, as assigned by an ophthalmologist.
